- Certificate course in:
- Substance misuse, care and counselling
|
|
|
|
With a clear Christian foundation, this professional training course provides a recoginsed qualification, a s well as meeting DANOS* competencies. This enables those with relevant experience to become full members of the Federation of Drug and Alcohol Professionals.
The ground breaking course is designed to equip the Church and community to make positive responses to the problem of addictions. The only requirements for the course are a God-given commitment to work with drug/alcohol misusers and an ability to study as part of a team and also independently.

The structure of the course
The course consists of 19 days formal training, typically on a day-release basis over six to 12 months. Four written assignments are required, followed by a 50 hour voluntary placement in a rehabilitation setting. An introduction to learning skills session enables students, who are returning to learning, to develop confidence.
Church and Project Partnerships
We work in partnership with leaders in ensuring this training forms part of a Church or Project’s vision and in deploying the training in church-community structured outreach programmes. Candidates need approval from a church leader/minister.
One of the aims of the course is to promote professional working within a Christian framework, in both basic care and counselling for those with addictions, with students developing a broad understanding of the scope of the drug problem and the range of therapeutic options available. Students will also experience how theory and practice are related, through keeping a learning log or diary.
More than training
Based on our 35 years in drug and alcohol rehabilitation, the University Certificate Course has been running for six years. We offer unique training and support to enable churches to understand addiction issues and, where appropriate, establish community programmes and projects. All our training programmes reflect clear Christian values whilst at the same time use insights and methods of many working in the field of addiction.
Course Location
The Certificate Course can be run in any suitable ‘learning friendly’ location in the UK, where there are a minimum of 10 -12 students. Costs are £1100 including University validation fees, access to University resources, all materials and handouts and administration. Where a church or individual cannot afford the full fees a bursary can be applied for subject to availability. In some areas educational grants are available from local trusts, especially for those who previously have not accessed further education.
As an introduction to the course LFTW is happy to meet with local church and project leaders and to stage one day events (See the ‘addiction awareness training’ section) which will not only equip but give a flavour of any future training. When a Certificate Course is running, if places are available, individual course modules or days can be taken by other students. In such cases, only a Certificate of Attendance will be provided.
