Alcohol and drugs -
a problem for the workplace

Every year increasing numbers of lives are ruined by alcohol and drug abuse. One of the first places problems can surface is the workplace, manifesting in the form of everything from taking sick days to recover, to dismissal for gross misconduct.

The addiction problem can impact a business and an individual employee in many ways these can include:

• Normally non-problematic drug/alcohol use outside of work leads to being ‘over the limit’, with hangovers or withdrawal symptoms when they present for work

• Illicit drug use by employees that can bring the company into disrepute

• Problem drug or alcohol use seriously affecting an employees ability to carry out tasks at work or to work with colleagues leading to mistakes and worse, accidents

• Prescribed medication directly affecting an employee’s ability to do their job.

A workplace drug and alcohol policy

A workplace drug and alcohol policy has been developed by LFTW together with a training package for managers and workers. This is designed to ensure that:

• All staff members are clear what the company will and will not allow in relation to their drug and alcohol use.

• Opportunities are given for raising awareness of drug and alcohol issues among management and staff and any opportunities for training.

• The company has structures in place to deal with drug and alcohol problems when they arise and have an understanding of testing and treatment options.

• Staff confidence in seeking help for drug and alcohol related problems are increased, rather than encouraging them to hide such problems.

This package is available to businesses and organisations and can be tailored to meet the needs of any size of company.

We are particularly interested to hear from projects experienced in working with addictions who would like to have a franchise arrangement with LFTW to deliver this policy and training locally.
